Irving Stone also frequently describes sculpting marble which involves a lot of hammering, chiseling, and hacking away at the stone in sexual terms and that got REAL weird real fast, particularly as he ignores Michelangelo’s sexuality, both with women or men.

I felt I was reading a textbook that was dressed up to be a novel. If the writing were elegant or the character more engaging, I might have read on. While I love art historical fiction, the Italian Renaissance, the book lost its charm for me as the story continued to unfold.

While Stone clearly did his r I appreciated learning more about Michelangelo whom I’d never really read anything etazbut the pedestrian way this book was written kind of killed the intrigue for me. The first pages I was so totally bored I really wanted to stop reading it, but it was my book club’s selection so I decided to power through. This and the Phantom Tollbooth! I used to choose books, in fact, on their length extsz the amount of narrative I could count on, because I wanted to get completely lost in the author’s world.
This book is a train wreck.
