YA steampunk I finally figured out the name of this genre is engaging. Let’s just say that that was different.

Besides all of that, there’s still Deryn and Alek.

Works by Scott Westerfeld. After Alek accidentally leaves his papal scroll in his hotel room, he, Deryn westsrfeld Lilit return at night to find it. Perspicacious doesn’t even begin to cover it. The third novel, Goliathis set in motion when they find out they are going to the Far East.

Alek gives the Committee most of his gold to finance this plan, as the spices are expensive. Soon afterward, Deryn recieves a medal for bravery for rescuing Newkirk.

The behemoth destroys the Goeben and the Breslau in the strait, following the Leviathan as it attacks. Klopp immediately puts the engines on full retreat without permission. The story begins in the middle of the day on the great airship Leviathan but within a few pages, a battle is raging, and there’s no time to explain to newcomers what is going on – that Dylan and Deryn are, in fact, one person and the feminine pronouns are no mistake; that Alek is actually Prince Aleksander, heir to the recently-assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand; and why the Leviathan is headed into Istanbul not Constantinople.


Behemoth continues an alternate history story begun in Leviathan. It was pleasant to have Alek’s men Bauer and Klopp developed more. Always hard to discuss successive books in a series!

Alek is an archduke and the rightful heir to the throne of Austria. Deryn began sesterfeld get a little on my nerves with her insecurities about her feelings for Alek. I feel like this book was less confusing than Leviathan by a mile. I did find the battle scenes exciting.

However, she still helps the Committee with their revolutionary plans, suggesting spice bombs as a form of attack. It wasn’t any REALLY significant scenes and they were probably taken out for the sake of the way story was being told or maybe because they didn’t want the book too long or maybe to keep it fast-pacedbut still This one has lots of fun and thrilling action, amazing bioengineered beasts and fiendish war machines, and colorful characters.

Without a doubt, Westerfeld’s Leviathan was one of my favourite books from last year, so when westerefld second book came out I ordered it straight away – I just had to get it in my hands. It certainly doesn’t earn Alek any points in my book, but Westerfeld gets some for not making him illogically ahead of his time. But he’ll be insulted anyway.
